Dar es Salaam to Host Pan-African Comedy Festival as Punchline Launches PICF 2026
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – April 15, 2026: Punchline Africa has officially announced the launch of the Punchline International Comedy Festival (PICF) 2026, a major continental comedy event set to take place in the city from May 25 to June 1, 2026.
The week-long festival will bring together comedians from across Africa, featuring a series of live performances, media engagements, and cultural exchange activities. The event will culminate in a Grand Finale at the Superdome, expected to draw large audiences.
PICF 2026 will showcase both English and Swahili stand-up comedy performances, highlighting the diversity and richness of Africa’s comedy scene.
Beyond entertainment, organizers say the festival aims to promote mental wellness by emphasizing the importance of laughter as a tool for emotional relief and social connection, particularly at a time when many people face personal and societal challenges.
Speaking at the launch, Punchline Africa Co-Founder Evans Bukuku said comedy plays a deeper role in society beyond humor.
“Comedy is not just about making people laugh. It helps people understand life, reduce stress, and connect with others. Through PICF, we want to create a space where people can come together, laugh, and leave feeling better,” he said.
On her part, the Ambassador of France to Tanzania, Anne Sophie Ave, said the French Embassy decided to support the festival due to its belief in the power of creative arts, particularly among Tanzanian youth.
“Young people have incredible talent and creativity, but many hesitate to express themselves. We believe this platform will help them build confidence and access international opportunities,” she noted.
She added that Tanzania was chosen to host the festival due to its strategic position as a hub of East Africa and its historical role in Pan-African movements.
Meanwhile, the Director of Film Development at the Tanzania Film Board, Emmanuel Ndumukwa, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a breakthrough moment for the country’s comedy industry. He reaffirmed the government’s readiness to support such initiatives through cultural funding, while emphasizing the need for transparent participation criteria.
Representing Tanzanian comedians, Humphrey Richard, popularly known as MC Kisoli, expressed optimism about the festival’s impact.
“This is more than entertainment—it’s a platform for learning, cultural exchange, and growth. It has the potential to transform the lives of comedians across Tanzania and Africa,” he said.
The festival is part of the Création Africa project, funded by the French Embassy and coordinated by Alliance Française Dar es Salaam, which aims to empower local creatives and institutions.
The official launch took place during a press conference held at Punchline Comedy Club in Masaki, attended by various stakeholders including SGA Security, which will provide security services throughout the event.
Organizers expect PICF 2026 to attract a wide audience, including youth, creatives, and entertainment stakeholders, while reaching over one million people through digital platforms.
Further details on performers, schedules, and ticketing are expected to be released in the coming days.
