GOVERNMENT TO UPGRADE TAZARA RAILWAY – KATAMBI

The Government of Tanzania has announced plans to upgrade the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) line as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen trilateral cooperation between Tanzania, Zambia, and China.

The cooperation traces back to the founding leaders of the three nations, including Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Kenneth David Kaunda, and Mao Zedong, who initiated the construction of the TAZARA railway between 1970 and 1975.

Speaking during a memorial event honoring 65 Chinese experts who died during the construction of the railway, the Minister for Home Affairs, Patrobas Katambi, said the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has entered into an agreement with China to rehabilitate and modernize the historic railway.

The event was held at the Chinese experts’ cemetery in Gongolamboto, Dar es Salaam, where Katambi noted that the strong foundation of cooperation established by the three nations continues to thrive across economic, political, technological, and cultural sectors. He added that Tanzanians have witnessed numerous development projects implemented with the support of Chinese expertise.

Also speaking at the event, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, James Millya, expressed gratitude to China for maintaining strong bilateral relations with Tanzania. He emphasized that China supported Tanzania during its early stages of development, not only through financial resources but also through human capital, with some experts sacrificing their lives.

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, reaffirmed China’s commitment to continuing the longstanding partnership with Tanzania and Zambia. She highlighted China’s ongoing involvement in various development projects as a reflection of the enduring relationship between the three nations.
