Mwanza Regional Commissioner Urges Public to Protect Environment, Enforce Environmental Laws
MWANZA — The Regional Commissioner of Mwanza, Said Mtanda, has called on residents to actively participate in environmental conservation, while urging the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) and local government environmental officers to intensify regular inspections to ensure environmental cleanliness and safety.
Speaking during a meeting with NEMC officials and members of the press, Mtanda emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of environmental laws to safeguard natural resources and public health.
He noted that under the Environmental Management Act No. 191, the government has prohibited all activities that contribute to environmental pollution, particularly in water sources and protected areas.
Mtanda further explained that Section 57 of the law forbids any individual from constructing buildings, carrying out activities, or disposing of waste within 60 meters of water sources or protected zones. The measure aims to preserve these critical resources.
He said the restrictions come in response to the increasing cases of environmental degradation, which threaten water sources, public health, and the sustainability of natural resources.
As part of strengthening enforcement, the government, through regional and local authorities, has stepped up efforts in environmental management, including forest protection, conservation of water sources, and improvement of waste management infrastructure.
At the same time, environmental inspections are ongoing in various areas with social and economic activities, including bars, entertainment venues, industries, and commercial areas. The inspections aim to ensure compliance with standards of cleanliness, safety, and environmental protection.
Mtanda warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals and businesses found violating environmental laws. Such measures include revocation of business licenses and other legal penalties for offenses such as illegal waste disposal, unauthorized construction near water sources, and deforestation.
He also highlighted that the government continues to collaborate with the public by providing environmental education and conducting awareness campaigns to enhance understanding of the importance of conservation. This cooperation is seen as vital in ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources for both present and future generations.
