Tanzania and Russia Sign Transport Cooperation Agreement to Boost Infrastructure Development
The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Government of the Russian Federation have signed a cooperation agreement in the transport sector, marking a significant step toward strengthening infrastructure development and technical collaboration between the two countries.
The agreement was signed on April 3, 2026, on the sidelines of the International Transport and Logistics Forum held in St. Petersburg. It brings together Tanzania’s Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Russia’s Minister of Transport, Andrey Nikitin, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Tanzania in the transport sector. He noted that the agreement builds on resolutions reached during the Russia–Africa Summit 2023, and highlighted Russia’s readiness to support technical collaboration, invest in modern infrastructure, and participate in strategic transport projects in Tanzania.
On his part, Tanzania’s Minister for Transport, Makame Mbarawa, described the agreement as part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance the transport sector through partnerships with technologically advanced nations.
Professor Mbarawa said the cooperation framework will facilitate knowledge exchange, capacity building, and technology transfer, ultimately improving the efficiency of Tanzania’s transport infrastructure and positioning the country as a regional transport hub.
He further noted that the agreement is expected to unlock new opportunities for investment, research, and innovation in strategic projects, while also strengthening human resource capacity within the sector.
Overall, the agreement is anticipated to further deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Tanzania and Russia, particularly in advancing the development of the transport sector.
