Tanzania’s JKCI Moves to Introduce Heart Transplant Services

The Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) has launched a process to establish heart transplant services in Tanzania, marking a major step toward advancing specialized cardiac care and positioning the country on the global medical map.

Speaking on April 9, 2026 in Dodoma, JKCI Executive Director Peter Kisenge said the institute conducted a feasibility study in 2025 and formed a special committee to guide the implementation of the service.

Kisenge noted that the committee has completed its work and submitted a draft framework for establishing heart transplant services in January this year. The next phase involves sending JKCI specialists to leading international hospitals for advanced training and exposure to best practices in heart transplantation.

He emphasized that the institute aims to ensure that by 2030, JKCI becomes one of the hospitals globally offering heart transplant services.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in Tanzania while reducing the need for patients to seek such highly specialized care abroad.
