MWENGE TRADERS, BODABODA OPERATORS RULE OUT PARTICIPATION IN JULY 7 DEMONSTRATIONS

DAR ES SALAAM – Small-scale traders and motorcycle taxi operators in the Mwenge area of Dar es Salaam have announced that they will not take part in the demonstrations planned for July 7, 2026, citing concerns over peace, security and the potential impact on their businesses.

The traders said the decision was reached after internal consultations, during which members reflected on the consequences of the unrest that occurred on October 29, 2025. They noted that the disturbances resulted in loss of lives, destruction of property and significant damage to businesses.

Speaking on behalf of the traders, Mwenge Market vendor Tumaini Ulotu said the business community had unanimously agreed to continue with its normal activities on the day of the planned demonstrations.

“We do not see any benefit in these demonstrations. Our past experience showed us the devastating consequences, including the loss of relatives and friends, while many businesses were either damaged or completely destroyed. On July 7, we will continue with our businesses as usual and call on the government to strengthen security and public safety,” she said.

The traders further stated that the aftermath of previous unrest brought severe economic challenges, particularly during periods of movement restrictions, which left many families struggling to access basic necessities due to loss of income.

Bodaboda operators in the area echoed similar sentiments, saying they depend on daily earnings and cannot afford disruptions that could affect their livelihoods. They stressed that peace and stability remain essential for economic growth and community development.

The group also appealed to young people across the country to avoid being drawn into activities that could undermine public order, maintaining that they would not allow themselves to be used for political interests at the expense of national peace and economic stability.
